A Letter from Gordon

A little bit of news for you ahead of the US tour, our first tour in some eight months. To have been away from the winding road of touring so long is a pretty big deal for us, considering we've spent most of the last four years playing our skewed R'n'B meltdown with barely so much as a pause for a cup of tea between shows. But the time has come to stretch the gig legs and break out the spandex once more.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to join the boys during the next month or so of touring. The reason for this is that my wife is expecting our first baby in a few weeks and after some long hard thinking we all decided, band included, that it was a bit silly for me to be flying round the world at such a critical time in the pregnancy. No one wants me to wind up in the wrong continent should there be any complications or should the little one decide to put in an early appearance. So while the other chaps are jetting around the Pacific Rim I will be buying the groceries, attending ante-natal classes and generally preparing myself for the cloud of unknown that is becoming a Dad.

In my stead we've been schooling a friend of ours, Daniel Lindegren (aka Tommy Sparks), in the ways of the Bloc. For the next few weeks Daniel will be doing his best to cover my portfolio of bass, keys, buttons, knobs and things that go 'clonk'. He is more than proficient at many of these things so I can't see it marring anyone's enjoyment of the Bloc Party experience while I'm away. All being well, I will return to reclaim my mantle around the end of August, possibly bringing with me some profound wisdom as a new father, if not a complete lack of sleep.

Keep on rockin' young 'uns

Gordy. x

The World

Bloc Party, whose second album 'A Weekend In The City' narrowly missed out topping the UK charts this week (it entered at No.2 behind Mika) also hit the charts at No.2 in Japan, Australia and Ireland.

The album charted top 5 in Germany and Belgium, top 10 in France, Switzerland, Singapore and Hong Kong, top 20 in Holland, Sweden, Norway and Austria and top 30 in Denmark and Italy.

On top of that the band also achieved a massive breakthrough in the US with a No.12 debut on the album chart!

'A Weekend In The City' has already sold over half a million copies worldwide, confirming Bloc Party as one of the UK’s most successful international groups of recent years.

Talking about the new album’s success Kele said “I'm overwhelmed and blown away by it, I can't really take it all in to be honest. You make the best record you can and you put it out there and you really don't know what's going to happen or how people are going to react. Then when you hear stuff like this it just make you feel like it's all worthwhile and that it means something to people. That's the best thing really, not the chart positions so much... just knowing that we've made a record that means something to people".

The band, who are currently in the middle of a sell out UK tour, celebrate the album’s success by announcing their biggest UK shows to date. The six-date UK tour starts in Glasgow on the 14th April and culminates with two shows at Brixton Academy on the 19th and 20th April.

A Weekend In The City

Bloc Party release their second full-length album A Weekend In The City - 5th February 2007 through Wichita Recordings. Produced by Jacknife Lee and recorded at Grouse Lodge Studios in Ireland. Bloc Party's newest collection of songs is a stunning, intense and brilliant follow-up to their celebrated debut Silent Alarm. The album will be preceded by the single The Prayer, released 29th January 2007.

Upon release of Silent Alarm in February 2005, Bloc Party were catapulted into the global spotlight, gathering worldwide fans and critical acclaim, with the NME voting Silent Alarm "Album of the Year". They have gone on to sell over a million copies of the album worldwide.

A Weekend in The City is inspired by lead singer Kele Okereke's interest in what he calls "the living noise of a metropolis." On Weekend, the band captures every detail from ebullient to the mundane ñ of daily life in a modern city, and the quiet desolation that suffuses everything from commuting to casual sex, from going out on a Friday night to the long ride home in the early hours of the morning. These are songs desperate to understand the meaning that pulses under the moments of our everyday: there are bursting with tension, paranoia, sadness, love and an intense need for reason as to how city life has become so displacing.

The track listing for A Weekend in the City is...

01.	Song For Clay (Disappear Here)
02.	Hunting For Witches
03.	Waiting For the 7.18
04.	The Prayer
05.	Uniform
06.	On
07.	Where Is Home?
08.	Kreuzberg
09.	I Still Remember
10.	Sunday
11.	SRXT

Bloc Party will be touring America throughout autumn. They return to tour the UK in January 2007, their first UK Tour since October 2005.

Wait A Minute Out Today!

About a year ago, Newcastle's YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO contacted some of their favourite artists and invited them to collaborate on a new album. The collaborators each came to the studio to form a band for the day, wrote a song and disbanded once again. The result is 'Print is Dead vol. 1'

The first release from 'Print is Dead' will be 'Wait a Minute' by the League of International Super Best Friends - the very shortlived band that YCNI:M formed with Bloc Party's Gordon Moakes. The track will be available as a strictly limited 7" single and download from Monday 2nd October.

Gordon said of the recording "I appeared on a frosty December day after months touring the world with the Bloc. We finally found time just before Christmas. I'd loved 'Ignoto' [YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO's debut album] so a chance to hang out, even butt musical horns as it were with Milo was something I relished. Our track started pretty simply: I just mentioned something about Les Savy Fav and Justin started putting down a groovy little beat which we built some slinky hooks over. I said it should all kick off and sound dense at the end and Paul wrote that riff which appears at the end. I piled it up with moving chords on the bass to make it sound thicker, and we all loved it straightaway. Last of all did the vocal, which is where the magic happened. Paul makes notes, sings off the top of his head through a megaphone, then goes back over it filling in the gaps. It's spur-of-the-moment and you tend to capture the best feel that way. He's got an amazing ear for melody too, I remember being mightily impressed with that."

You can order the 7" single and album at recordstore.co.uk or if digital is what you're after, you can get that here.

YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO have been debuting one track every week on their MySpace page in the run up to the album's release on the 6th of November. In addition to Gordon's contribution to 'Print is Dead vol. 1', the album also includes collaborations with Hot Club De Paris, The Automatic, Futureheads, Tom Vek, Martin Grech, Field Music, Reuben, Lethal Bizzle, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and Lukas Wooller (Maximo Park).

From www.teenagecancertrust.org

The Facts

Each day in the UK, 6 teenagers will find out they have cancer. That is over 2,200 new diagnoses each year. More often than not, these young people get a raw deal, receiving hospital treatment in inappropriate facilities alongside children or older people. In many cases, cancer in teens is not picked up early enough and symptoms are dismissed as growing pains or sports injuries. Because teenagers are undergoing growth spurts, their cancers grow faster than other age groups and they can be at greater risk.

Cancer is more common than you think - it is the most common cause of non-accidental death in teens and young adults in the UK. By the age of 15 you have a 1 in 600 chance of developing cancer. By the age of 24 you will have had a 1 in 285 chance of developing cancer. In the last 30 years the incidence of cancer in the teenage and young adult group has increased by 50% and for the first time ever, the number of teens with cancer now exceeds the number of children with cancer.

The next subject up for interrogation over on Marshals is Paul Epworth, the producer of Bloc Party's debut album, 'Silent Alarm'. He has made a name for himself by producing albums for the likes of Maximo Park, The Futureheads and The Rakes. Not content with monopolising the art-rock fraternity, Epworth also puts out remixes under his 'Phones' guise.

In his own words: "I always wanted to make exciting music. The stuff that made the hairs on your neck stand on end. That magic factor that could be about a song, a sound, a voice, a rhythm, or just silence.........space......"

Send your questions to james@blocparty.com over the next week and I'll choose the best ones to ask to him!
